Canada's Airports and the Highway 407 Lesson: Who Really Benefits?
Canada plans to lease the operation of its four largest airports to private investors. In 1999, Ontario did the same with Highway 407 — for 99 years, with no cap on tolls.
Tolls rose more than 300%, the road is now worth over $40 billion, and Ontario receives none of the tolls.
In this video: who the airport plan would benefit, in the Prime Minister's own words; who is left out. Stay-at-home parents, small business owners, disabled Canadians and seniors living on Old Age Security; and what we're asking for:
✔ 51% public ownership and voting rights in every public-private partnership
✔ Caps on fees
✔ Full terms made public on signing
✔ A named, accountable body holding the public's share
✔ Private operators covered by access-to-information law and the Ombudsman
✔ An independent review of all existing P3s, and an independent integrity watchdog
✔ A citizen dividend for every resident, protected from clawbacks
